  • Copypasting my comment in !europe@feddit.org (it was cross posted there) :

To be fair, it’s a bunch of random personal experiences that in no way represent France as a whole. Fil dentaire has existed for decades here, people use them if they want to, in addition to brushing their teeth three times a day after each meal. The fact that the article translates it to soie dentaire which is exclusively French Canadian makes me very distrustful of the author…

Google Translate suggested “passer la soie dentaire”, which roughly translates to “passing dental silk between your teeth”.

What kind of journalist relies on google translate for a translation and not fact check…

  • On May 19, Honda Motor Co. announced that its American subsidiary has terminated its sponsorship contract with the world-renowned eSports team “Team Liquid” after a member of the team posted an image related to the atomic bomb. [Image: Player Dias’ Apology Post]

Lucas Dias, a Brazilian player belonging to “Team Liquid,” posted a GIF image related to the atomic bombing on X (formerly Twitter) after losing to Japan-based “CAG OSAKA” in a world tournament on May 13. The post sparked a flood of criticism, with many saying it “trivialized the damage caused by the atomic bomb.” Dias subsequently deleted the post and issued an apology on May 16, stating, “It was a big mistake.”

Honda explained to HuffPost Japan that the reason for the contract termination was that Dias’ post was “incompatible with Honda’s philosophy of ‘Respect for Humanity.’”

Initially, Honda responded to the incident by promptly lodging a strong protest with the team. As of May 17, since Dias had deleted the post and published an apology, and Team Liquid had presented measures to prevent recurrence, Honda had not yet terminated the sponsorship at that time.

However, after further careful consideration of the matter, Honda decided to terminate the contract.

The GIF image posted by Dias appears to have been taken from a segment of the BBC’s coverage and reenactment video “Hiroshima: Dropping The Bomb - Hiroshima - BBC” (originally posted in 2017).

In his apology on May 16, Dias explained, “It was a big mistake to use that GIF image. I understand that it may have made many people uncomfortable. From the bottom of my heart, I never intended to be insulting, but I now recognize that the context of the image and my choice were inappropriate.”
